Removing the default permissions
The default access control settings created by the default configuration wizard
allows anyone access to any newsgroup. To properly limit access to only people with
a valid username, you must first delete or disable these default settings.
In the MPNews administration site for your virtual server, select the "Users" option,
then the "User List" option.
You should see a single entry in the list with a blank username. Uncheck the box
to the left of this entry to stop giving full access to anyone without a username.
Creating a user group
To be able to assign permissions to your users, you must first create a user group
that all your users will belong to.
Go to the "Role List" page in the MPNews administration site for your virtual server,
found under the main "Users" option.
Click on "Add New Role". Give the role a name, e.g. "All users", and click on Save
to create the group.
Creating users
For each person you want to give access to your newsgroups, you must create a user.
While still on the "User List" page, click on "Add New User" to create a user. In
the screen that appears, enter the username and password the person is to use to
log on to your server. In the "Roles" section, select the user group you created
earlier. Leave all the other settings on their default values, and click on OK to
save the user.
Repeat this step for each user you want to be able to access your server.
Giving the permissions to the users
Now you have your users defined and grouped together, you need to give them permission
to read and post messages in your newsgroups.
Select the "Permission List" item, found under the main "Users" option.
Click on "Add New Permission" to create new permissions. Give the permissions a
name, e.g. "Full Access".
In the "Newsgroup permissions" area, enter "*" for the newsgroups, and select the
"Read" and "Post" permissions. In the "Roles" area, select the user group you created
earlier. Click on OK to save the permissions.
Finished
Your system is now set up to only allow access to people who have entered a valid
username and password.
You can go further by modifying the permissions to give different levels of access
to different newsgroups, or edit your user definitions to only allow your users
to connect from specific IP addresses.
